Gold-medalist Olympic gymnast Simone Biles was inside George Bush Intercontinental Airport Tuesday to celebrate the opening of her new restaurant “Taste of Gold,” according to the Houston Airport System.

Biles appeared with her family to introduce the “upscale cafe” to Terminal A — a bright spot during the partial government shutdown, which has turned airports into a travel nightmare for passengers as fewer TSA agents show up to work without pay. Biles’ restaurant had been set to open in the first quarter of 2025 and was tucked away from the hourslong TSA lines, standing near Gate A8.

The restaurant displays decorations inspired by Biles’ career and serves sandwiches, salads, shareables, including her favorite “Simone’s Skewers,” and dessert, according to Houston Airports. Biles, who grew up in the Houston area, opened the business with Athlete Playmaker Group, which specializes in airport restaurants, airport officials said.

In an interview with the Chronicle, Biles said Athlete Playmaker Group approached her with the idea for the restaurant, and she jumped at the opportunity. She said she had a lot of creative direction, from the restaurant’s bar stools to the artwork.

“Airports are the front door to a city, but too often feel interchangeable,” Missimo said in a release. “Taste of Gold supports our goal of creating places that feel familiar and local, without sacrificing quality, speed or consistency.”

The restaurant will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to Houston Airports. Multiple TVs will display sporting events there, and 3D art by a Texas designer will brighten the space, according to the airport system.

“To have a global icon like Simone Biles choose Bush Airport for her first restaurant speaks to the strength of this platform and the millions of passengers we serve each year,” Francisco Cuellar, the chief commercial development officer for Houston Airports, said. “Taste of Gold captures Houston’s spirit—excellence, energy and ambition—and it raises the bar for what passengers can expect when they travel through IAH.”

The restaurant’s opening came as standard security screening waits exceeded four hours at Bush Airport due to a TSA worker shortage during the partial government shutdown, which has halted funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Biles said she was able to avoid the lines on her way to the restaurant with a special escort on the airport tarmac, but she said she feels “awful” about the situation at Houston’s airports.

“The lines are a little bit overwhelming, crazy, and traveling is already anxiety filled for most travelers,” Biles said. “So to get a smooth walk through the airport, that would be super nice. So hopefully we decide to pay those workers exactly what they’re worth so that everyone can get back to work and travel can be smooth again.”

Texas-based Pluckers Wing Bar and Joe’s Italian Restaurant of Conroe have each started offering TSA workers free meals during the partial government shutdown, and Biles said she may be open to a similar offer.

“I think that would be amazing to implement because it is such hard times in this moment,” Biles said. “And we have incredible staff, we have incredible food, so I would definitely love to do that, yes.”

Before the world knew her name, Simone Biles was just a six-year-old in a gymnastics class. Standing beside her was another little girl, Rachel Roettger. Neither of them knew then that one would become a global icon with 11 Olympic medals, while the other would stay away from the cameras. But they never walked away from each other. And now, years later, that same friendship showed up again in a heartwarming gesture.

Rachel Roettger, who married Drake Roettger in 2023, recently shared a life update as she is expecting a baby. But along with that announcement came something she clearly did not see coming!

Taking to Instagram, Rachel posted a series of photos that caught attention. In the first image, she stands in a garage beside a brand-new white Hyundai Palisade SEL FW. Even a large pink ribbon was stretched across the hood of the car.

Right next to her is Simone Biles, holding her baby bump. The rest of the photos show the white SUV from different angles, along with the car keys, while one frame also includes her husband. But the meaning behind the moment became clear through Rachel’s caption:

She wrote, “get you a bestfriend like mine 😜💗 which SB surprised me w/ my dream mom car 🥹 forever thankful for YOU. 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾 xo.”

Simone Biles replied in the comments, “love youuuu sm,” with Rachel responding, “love you back.” Interestingly, the car, a gift from Simone Biles, is valued at around $41,339. However, Biles also shared parts of the moment on her Instagram stories. In one, she is seen signing the car with the caption, “buying my best friend a car.” In another, she posed with it with the car, writing, “truly blessed to be able to do these things.”

Even though they both live in Texas and follow different careers, Rachel works as a Procurement Buyer at Baker Hughes. They’ve maintained a close friendship over the years. But how did it all begin?

Rachel Roettger sensed Simone Biles’ struggle before anyone else in Tokyo Olympics

Simone Biles and Rachel Roettger have been friends since they were six years old. They met in a gymnastics class in Texas. Since then, their friendship has stood the test of time.

When Biles withdrew from several events in the Tokyo Olympics due to the “twisties,” most people assumed it was due to nerves. Rachel, however, sensed immediately that something was wrong. “I knew right then and there something was wrong,” she said from her home in Spring. Concerned, she texted Biles: “Hey, what is going on? Are you okay? ’ I thought she was hurt because there’s no way she should have landed like that.” Biles replied, “I’m not hurt, but I’m just going through some things.”

Even as adults, their friendship remains intact. When Rachel married Drake Roettger on October 6, 2023, Biles could not attend the wedding as she was competing in Belgium at the World Gymnastics Championships. Yet she didn’t let her BF’s big day go by without her, as she shared on social media:

Simone Biles’ husband, Jonathan Owens, signed a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts following his time with the Chicago Bears.

Last season, Owens played for the Chicago Bears, where they made the playoffs but lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round.

“No Friday the 13th scaries here,” Biles wrote via her Instagram Stories on Friday, March 13, reposting the news that Owens, 30, signed a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts. “So proud of you, baby.”

“Indy, here we come!” she added.

Owens has played for five teams in his NFL career, including signing to the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2018, where he was on the injured reserve, then the Houston Texans, where he spent four seasons from 2019 to 2022, the Green Bay Packers for the 2023 season, and the Bears for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Owens has yet to share his own reaction to the signing, but according to his Instagram Story, he is busy celebrating Biles’ birthday. The 11-time Olympic medalist turned 29 on Saturday, March 14.

There’s no doubt that the seven-time Olympic gold medalist will be supporting her husband in Indianapolis just as he has for her during the Olympics. She told the Olympics official site in 2024 about how much it means to her to support him.

“Oh, my gosh. It means the world to me. And I know it means so much to him for me to be able to go and support his games,” she told the site. “For him, it means a lot for me to go on the sideline before because he says that’s his pre-game routine. So he’s always looking for me on the sideline to give him, like, good luck vibes and wishes. That’s just his superstition.”

Biles was known for her custom looks at Bears games, often including Owens’ No. 36 jersey number onto her clothing and even his face in some looks.

She spoke about how she gets her outfit looks together and that she usually just wings it.

“Honestly, I reach out to some of the creators that make the apparel, and I have no ideas,” she told the Olympics official site in 2024. “I let them kind of freeball it, and I say, ‘Surprise me.’ And then that’s how I piece them together.”

The world’s most decorated gymnast turns 29 just as husband Jonathan Owens trades his Chicago Bears jersey for a new contract with the Indianapolis Colts.

While the sports world often focuses on the gravity-defying feats of Simone Biles in the arena, her recent weekend was defined by milestone moments occurring far from the gymnastics floor.

On Saturday, March 14, 2026, the legendary athlete marked her 29th birthday, a celebration that coincided with a significant shift in her family’s professional life.

Only 24 hours prior to her big day, her husband, NFL safety Jonathan Owens, officially moved on from his two-year stint with the Chicago Bears to sign a new deal in free agency.

The timing turned a routine birthday into a celebratory send-off for the couple as they prepare to relocate their lives to Indiana.

Biles, who has amassed seven Olympic gold medals throughout her unparalleled career, began her personal festivities on Friday evening. She documented the transition from age 28 with a high-end dinner that featured an elaborate, ornate dessert.

The culinary centerpiece consisted of three scoops of sorbet encased in a delicate ice dome, topped with a chocolate disc reading “Happy Birthday.”

Dressed for the occasion in a white, halter-neck mini dress paired with a Louis Vuitton purse, the icon shared the intimate start of her 29th year with her millions of followers, setting a tone of elegance for the transition ahead.

Embracing the Indianapolis frontier and a one-year deal

The professional news that bookended the birthday celebrations involved a one-year agreement for Owens to join the Indianapolis Colts.

Having spent the previous two seasons in the Windy City, where he was a fixture in the Bears‘ secondary, Owens will now bring his veteran experience to the AFC South.

Biles, known for being a vocal presence in the stands during NFL Sundays, immediately took to social media to signal her support for the move.

On Friday, she shared an announcement of the contract with a message that dismissed any superstitions regarding the date: “No Friday the 13th scaries here. So proud of you, baby. Indy, here we come.”

This move to Indianapolis represents the latest major life change for the pair, who married in 2023. Owens‘ time in Chicago was marked by consistent reliability, as he participated in every regular-season and playoff game during his tenure.
